Nimona on Netflix: A Bold Tale That’s Not for Every Palette

Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

2 Thessalonians 2:15

⚔️ Violence: Intensity Level: Mild to Moderate:

  • You’ll see the typical hitting and punching in fight scenes, just like many shows these days. Some knights do get tossed about. The parts that gave me pause were when an arm gets cut off, though there’s no blood, and when a knight is stabbed in the stomach with a sword, but once again, without any blood.

🔈Language: Intensity Level: Mild to Strong:

  • At the movie’s conclusion, Bal exclaims, “Holy Sh**.” Another scene that raised my eyebrows was when a character remarked, “I don’t know what’s scarier, them coming to put a sword through my heart or that I want them to.” This character then disturbingly seems to gravitate towards a sword, hinting at self-harm. Also, there’s a reference to something named a “murder wall” in the film. Parents, just a heads-up!

❤️ Romance: Intensity Level: Mature:

  • Knight Ballister and Knight Ambrosius Goldenloin share a kiss. Additionally, gestures like Ballister placing his hand on Goldenloin’s and resting his head against his are depicted. Parents might want to be aware.

🌈Inclusive Elements:

  • “Nimona” introduces a variety of characters and themes that can be seen as touching upon topics of representation and identity. The dynamics between Knight Ballister and Knight Ambrosius Goldenloin, for instance, offer a portrayal that some might interpret as reflecting broader discussions on relationships and acceptance.
  • Nimona’s shape-shifting abilities add another layer to the film’s exploration of identity, showcasing the many forms and facets a character can take on.
  • The movie also delves into societal norms, prejudices, and the power of propaganda. Some viewers might see parallels with modern-day discussions on inclusivity and the importance of diverse narratives. The film prompts its audience to think, making “Nimona” more than just a typical animated adventure.

👻 Spooky Elements: Intensity Level: Moderate to intense:

  • There aren’t really spooky moments but there are moments of thrill. Nimona is a shape-shifter and sometimes, when she changes, her eyes turn bright pink or fiery red. There are also times when her teeth are sharp and pointy like a shark, and her voice changes to sound like that of an evil creature.

The animation style of “Nimona” is both refreshing and engaging. The juxtaposition of medieval attire against a backdrop of futuristic elements, such as cell phones, TV billboards, and flying motorcycles, offers a visually striking contrast. The central themes of identity and prejudice resonate deeply, underscoring the importance of looking beyond our differences to find common ground.

The film also delves into the dangers of propaganda and the concept of a controlled police state. The portrayal of leadership manipulating public opinion and wielding power to silence dissenters offers thought-provoking insights. The subtle societal commentary woven into the narrative is hard to miss.

For parents considering this movie, it may not be suitable for younger viewers. If chosen for family movie night, it’s a film best experienced together, fostering an environment for open discussions.
